USA Nijmegen

The annual USA Thanksgiving dinner is on November 26th in restaurant “De Gelagkamer“. The restaurant opens around 18:20 and we will start dinner at 18:30.

Tickets must be bought in advance. Members of USA Nijmegen pay € 16 and guests pay €18. Drinks are not included in the price. Please remember to bring some change to the restaurant to pay for your drink(s).

We will be selling tickets on the following dates:

Tuesday the  17th: 12:45 - 13:30
Thursday the 19th: 12:45 - 13:30
Monday the 23rd: 9:15 - 9:45

We will be selling by the front door of “De Refter”. Just look for the American flag and you will find us.

On April 1, the NOVA College Tour with Jesse Jackson will be broadcasted at 20.30 PM on Nederland 3. It will be a very interesting episode, so please do all watch!

We’re happy to announce the USA bake sale 2009! As you may know the Ragweek is an annual event during which students raise money for charities. The ragweek is from April 15th to the 22nd. Because the studytrip to Washington is also during that time, we start a little earlier.

The charities for which we raise money are: Let Kids Smile and Stichting Leergeld Nijmegen. The first one is a children’s home in Ghana. The second is an organization from Nijmegen. They help children from poor families participate in extracurricular activities. You can find more information by clicking on the names of the organizations in this post.

We sell home made chocolate chip muffins and brownies. All profits will go to the organizations mentioned above. The deadline for ordering is Saturday March 21 at noon. The orders will delivered to offices in the Erasmusbuilding the following week. Students will receive an email about when they can pick up their orders.

On March 27, 2009, the University of Groningen will host the 17th National Amerikanistendag, co-organized by the Netherlands American Studies Association (NASA). Based on the theme “Fired Up and Ready to Go? Envisioning Change in America’s Race, Class, and Gender Debates,” they have planned a series of eight workshops, framed by a keynote lecture and a final roundtable discussion with participants from the United States, Belgium, and The Netherlands. USA Nijmegen will of course go to the Amerikanistendag! You can walk with us from the train station to the RUG. Just send us an email with your name and phone number and we’ll wait for you. You can recognize us by our brand new red USA Nijmegen t-shirts!
We collect in front of the Bruna in Groningen at 10:00 AM and start walking 5 minutes later.

We’re proud to announce that Algemeen Nijmeegs Studentenblad ANS put us on an “average” 17th place in their “Universiteitsblaadjes” Top 30. “Average” meaning GOOD in our case, since American Studies has a limited budget, which means we have no money to give our beloved magazine a glossy cover and an equally fancy layout.

If you take a closer look at the Top 30, which they posted on their website, Take Five is ranked among the bigger Study Associations (like Rechten, Bedrijfswetenschappen, Communicatiewetenschap, etc.) making all of us at USA Nijmegen very proud owners!

We wish our new Take Five editor, Martine, good luck on keeping us at our lovely spot, or maybe even higher… say, #10?
